Pink Amethyst Skull with Feathered Headdress Carving - 942g

This skull was one of two I managed to secure at a really good price for the material. This piece is full of quartz, and it has gorgeous pink from a soft translucent to darker bands around the growth patterns. There is a lot of really pretty gemmy areas in this one and the carved feather detail is beautiful. On the left cheek there is a small quartz druzy pocket and you can see the raw botryoidal growths on the back of the skull.

Pink Amethyst gets its colour from the presence of Hematite within the quartz. It grows in botryoidal, shard-like and granular masses and can sometimes look a little like 'pink flower' agate except the base is quartz not chalcedony.
